The date and the rule

Why Vijayadashami is swayam-siddha — self-proven
Muhurat shastra’s default posture is sceptical: a day must earn the right to host a beginning by clearing tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. A very short classical list of dates is exempt from that examination — swayam-siddha, self-proven, auspicious by their own nature on every year they occur. The tradition variously counts three or three-and-a-half such days, and Vijayadashami is on every version of the list, alongside dates like Akshaya Tritiya and the year’s opening tithi.
What does the exemption mean in practice?
- No electional screening is required. You do not need to check the day’s nakshatra or yoga, or wait out an awkward choghadiya, before starting something. The day itself is the muhurat.
- It does not override common sense or the severe prohibitions a family parampara observes — a personal rule from your own pandit still stands.
- It applies to beginnings. Starting learning, a venture, a practice. The day’s classical name is the day of victory: what begins on it carries the year’s best auspice.
This is why Dussehra is the traditional day for vidyarambham — a child’s first letters — for the first rehearsal of a new art, for opening a ledger, and in many regions for worshipping the tools and instruments of one’s work before putting them to use after Navratri.
