What does Karthigai Deepam celebrate?
Karthigai Deepam is the Tamil festival of lights on the day the moon meets Krittika nakshatra in the month of Karthigai. Lamps line every home at dusk, and atop Tiruvannamalai's Arunachala hill the maha deepam is lit before millions.
The story and significance of Karthigai Deepam
The legend is the lingodbhava: Shiva as the endless pillar of light that Brahma and Vishnu could not measure. The Arunachala beacon — a cauldron of ghee visible for miles — rekindles it yearly.
Every Tamil home lights rows of agal vilakkus at sunset; the festival predates and parallels the northern Diwali in the Tamil calendar.

Does the Karthigai Deepam date change from city to city?
Yes, it can. Karthigai Deepam is fixed by a tithi prevailing at a specific moment — sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight — and that moment is local. Moving west or east across longitudes can push the prevailing tithi across a civil-date boundary, so Mumbai, Kolkata or New York can observe a day apart from Delhi. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions also differ on some fasting days. The date above follows the popular North-Indian convention for Delhi; the Bela app recomputes for your exact location.
