Pongal: dates, muhurat and meaning.
The next Pongal is on Friday, 15 January 2027. The date is computed from the classical panchang for Delhi (rule: classical festival table — tithi prevailing at local noon). Below are the Pongal dates for 2026 and 2027, the day's shubh muhurat windows, and what the festival celebrates.
Pongal by year
What is Pongal?
Pongal begins with the Tamil month of Thai, on Makar Sankranti day. The central rite is cooking the first rice of the harvest in milk and jaggery in the open courtyard, letting it boil over toward the sun.
Mattu Pongal honours cattle — bathed, garlanded and fed sweet rice — and Kaanum Pongal closes the festival with family gatherings. The listed date is Thai Pongal, the principal day.
Muhurat on Pongal
The Pongal pot is set to boil at an auspicious morning hour, avoiding Rahu Kaal. The day's Abhijit Muhurat above is the safest general window for thanksgiving rites and new beginnings.
| Window | Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Abhijit Muhurat (shubh for all works) | 12:10 PM – 12:51 PM |
