Raksha Bandhan by year

What is Raksha Bandhan?

The rakhi is tied on Shravana Purnima — but the classical rule is precise: the tying must avoid Bhadra (Vishti karana), when the rite is said to turn inauspicious. Years when Bhadra shadows the daylight hours push the tying into the evening, after Bhadra releases.

The day's other name is Avani Avittam in the South, when Brahmin men renew the sacred thread; and in the epics Draupadi's strip of cloth and Yama's sister Yamuna both anchor the custom.

Muhurat on Raksha Bandhan

This is the one festival where Bhadra (Vishti karana) rules the timing: tie the rakhi only in Bhadra-free hours while Purnima prevails. Bhadra occupies the first half of the Purnima tithi, so in years when the tithi begins in the morning it can shadow the entire daylight span — including the otherwise-universal Abhijit window — and practice moves to the evening, after Bhadra releases. The windows above are the day's general computed spans; for rakhi, the Bhadra rule overrides them.
