Vishu: dates, muhurat and meaning.

The next Vishu is on Wednesday, 14 April 2027. The date is computed from the classical panchang for Delhi (rule: classical festival table — tithi prevailing at local noon). Below are the Vishu dates for 2026 and 2027, the day's shubh muhurat windows, and what the festival celebrates.

Vishu by year

What is Vishu?

Vishu means 'equal' — it falls near the equinox year-side of the calendar, on the sun's entry into Mesha. The Vishukkani is arranged the night before so that the year's first sight is auspicious: the eldest leads each family member, eyes closed, before the lit nilavilakku lamp.

Elders give Vishukkaineetam to the young, crackers are burst, and the day ends in a full sadya. The date matches Baisakhi and the Tamil New Year — all three share the solar new year.

Muhurat on Vishu

The Vishukkani is viewed at dawn. New ventures and first transactions of the year are made in the day's shubh window — the Abhijit Muhurat above is the standard choice.

On a Wednesday the day's eighth muhurta — the same span as Abhijit — is itself the durmuhurtam, so classical practice does not count this window shubh. Prefer the day's good choghadiya instead.

Every festival, computed the same honest way.
