What does Guru Purnima celebrate?
Guru Purnima, the Ashadha full moon, honours the guru — spiritual and academic. It is the birthday of Veda Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata, and the day disciples offer puja and dakshina to their teachers.
The story and significance of Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is also Vyasa Purnima. The guru-shishya tradition holds the teacher as the fourth estate beyond mother, father and god — 'guru brahma, guru vishnu'.
Aspiring students begin new studies on this day, musicians and dancers perform for their teachers, and many begin the Chaturmas discipline from the following day.

Does the Guru Purnima date change from city to city?
Yes, it can. Guru Purnima is fixed by a tithi prevailing at a specific moment — sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight — and that moment is local. Moving west or east across longitudes can push the prevailing tithi across a civil-date boundary, so Mumbai, Kolkata or New York can observe a day apart from Delhi. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions also differ on some fasting days. The date above follows the popular North-Indian convention for Delhi; the Bela app recomputes for your exact location.
