What does Hartalika Teej celebrate?
Hartalika Teej, the third tithi of Bhadrapada's bright half, commemorates Parvati's resolve to win Shiva as her husband. Women — married and unmarried — keep a nirjala fast, dress in green and red, swing on decorated jhulas and pray for marital happiness.
The story and significance of Hartalika Teej
The name tells the story: Parvati's friend (sakhi) took (harit) her away to the forest so she could perform her penance undisturbed. The vrata is kept in her honour across North India.
It falls the day before Ganesh Chaturthi, so the two festivals share one busy season of sthapana and puja.

Does the Hartalika Teej date change from city to city?
Yes, it can. Hartalika Teej is fixed by a tithi prevailing at a specific moment — sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight — and that moment is local. Moving west or east across longitudes can push the prevailing tithi across a civil-date boundary, so Mumbai, Kolkata or New York can observe a day apart from Delhi. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions also differ on some fasting days. The date above follows the popular North-Indian convention for Delhi; the Bela app recomputes for your exact location.
