What does Kali Puja celebrate?

Kali Puja is Bengal and Assam's worship of Kali on the new-moon night of Kartik — the same Amavasya the rest of India keeps as Diwali. The goddess is worshipped at midnight with tantric rites, red hibiscus and bhog.

The story and significance of Kali Puja

While the North worships Lakshmi on Diwali night, Bengal worships Kali — the fierce, time-devouring, liberating Mother. The worship runs through the night, peaking at the nishita kaal.

Shyama Puja, as it is also called, centres on the great pandals of Kolkata and the cremation-ground imagery of the goddess who stands beyond fear.

How the Kali Puja date is fixed

Kali Puja falls on the Amavasya (new moon) of Kartik — the same new moon the rest of India keeps as Diwali. What separates the two is the hour the rule looks at. Lakshmi Puja is fixed by the Amavasya tithi prevailing at pradosh, the span just after sunset; Kali Puja is fixed by the tithi prevailing at nishita, the span around solar midnight, because the goddess is classically worshipped in the deep of the night. Both windows are computed from local sunset and sunrise rather than fixed clock hours, so when the tithi begins or ends between evening and midnight, the two observances can land on different civil days — the same new moon, read by two clocks.

How Kali Puja is celebrated

Kali Puja is the great night of Bengal, Assam and parts of Odisha — the counterpart, on the same new moon, of the north's Lakshmi-centred Diwali. In Kolkata the goddess is Shyama, the dark one, and her puja is a public spectacle second only to Durga Puja: pandals rise in every para, the image garlanded with red hibiscus, the worship running deep past midnight with bhog and the recitation of her hundred names. Dakshineswar and Kalighat, the city's two great Kali temples, draw all-night queues; Tarapith in Birbhum keeps its own fierce tradition. The evening before, on Bhoot Chaturdashi, homes light fourteen lamps to guide fourteen generations of ancestors home and see off wandering spirits. The night itself is also called Deepanwita — lamps line every sill, so Bengal's darkest night, like the north's, ends in light.

Frequently asked questions

When is Kali Puja in 2027?

Kali Puja in 2027 falls on Thursday, 28 October 2027. The date is computed for Delhi from the rule: classical festival table — tithi prevailing at local noon.

What is the shubh muhurat on Kali Puja 2027?

The computed windows for 28 October 2027 (Delhi): Abhijit Muhurat — 11:43 AM to 12:27 PM IST. Kali Puja's window is midnight (nishita kaal) on Amavasya night. The listed Abhijit Muhurat serves the civil day; the puja itself belongs to the night, computed per city in the app.

Does the Kali Puja date change from city to city?

Yes, it can. Kali Puja is fixed by a tithi prevailing at a specific moment — sunrise, noon, sunset or midnight — and that moment is local. Moving west or east across longitudes can push the prevailing tithi across a civil-date boundary, so Mumbai, Kolkata or New York can observe a day apart from Delhi. Smarta and Vaishnava traditions also differ on some fasting days. The date above follows the popular North-Indian convention for Delhi; the Bela app recomputes for your exact location.

When is Kali Puja in 2026?

Kali Puja in 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Full windows and notes are on the Kali Puja 2026 page, linked below.

Are Kali Puja and Diwali the same festival?

They share a new moon, not a liturgy. Both fall on the Kartik Amavasya, but the north worships Lakshmi in the evening pradosh hours while Bengal worships Kali around midnight. The two rules can even split the civil date: in 2026 the engine places both on Sunday, 8 November, but in 2027 Kali Puja falls on Thursday, 28 October while the Lakshmi Puja day is Friday, 29 October — the same Amavasya, read at midnight versus sunset. A Bengali household may well keep both: Deepanwita lamps in the evening, Shyama Puja deep in the night.

Why is Kali worshipped at midnight and not in the evening?

The classical texts assign each worship to the part of the day that suits its deity. The evening pradosh belongs to Lakshmi, who is welcomed into lit homes; Kali's hour is nishita — the span around solar midnight, when the Amavasya dark is deepest and the tantric tradition holds the veil thinnest. Nishita is not a fixed clock window: it is computed from local sunset and sunrise, so its exact span shifts from city to city and night to night. The windows printed above are the civil day's general shubh spans, not the puja's own hour.

What is Shyama Puja?

Shyama — the dark one — is the name Bengal most often gives Kali in worship, and Shyama Puja is simply Kali Puja under that name. The observance is credited with its modern form in eighteenth-century Bengal, when Raja Krishnachandra of Navadvipa promoted the household worship that the great Kolkata pandals now magnify. In Assam the night centres on the Shakta temples, Kamakhya above Guwahati foremost among them.

Every festival, computed the same honest way.
