What does Varalakshmi Vratam celebrate?

Varalakshmi Vratam is kept by married women — and increasingly whole families — on the Friday before Shravana Purnima, worshipping Varalakshmi, the boon-granting Lakshmi. The kalasha is dressed as the goddess and a yellow thread (charadu) is tied on the wrist.

The story and significance of Varalakshmi Vratam

The vrata is said to have been taught by Shiva to Parvati and by Lakshmi herself to Charumati. Its promise is the eight-fold wealth — the Ashtalakshmi blessings of prosperity, courage, progeny, victory, knowledge and more.

Being weekday-anchored (the Friday on or before Shravana Purnima), the date moves with both the tithi and the weekday, which is why some years' calendars differ by a week.
